English Moss Sideboard Makeover: A Before & After Furniture Transformation
First - we chose our project color - English Moss - an easy decision for the cozy, warm vibe we were looking for! Earthy and elegant, English Moss is a mid-tone green with muted, olive-gray undertones. Its rich warmth makes it a beautiful partner for woods, neutrals & soft whites - which was perfect for this piece!
How to Paint a Sideboard
-
Sanding
Typically we always say to skip the sanding and go straight to the PREP. But this piece had a top that was partly sanded already and we wanted to keep the warm wood top, so we used an electric sander to sand the top of the piece down to the original finish. It took about 15 minutes to sand it down and clean up the dust, then we were on to the Prep.

The Prep
This old piece was found on Marketplace and picked up from a junk pile. It was full of YUCK, so we cleaned it thoroughly - inside and out - with our Prep Cleaner. Spray it on - let it soak - then scrub with a scrubby pad. We're going to be honest - this one took at least 3 cleanings before we were feeling good about it, but then it was ready to go!

Natural Wood Top
We wanted to keep a natural wood finish on the top, so we mixed equal parts water and our resin paint color, Sand, to create a paint wash. We brushed it on and then wiped it off with a damp cloth. This technique cuts the orange tones out of the gorgeous oak, leaving a warm but neutral tone. Lastly, we sealed the top with Low Lustre Tuff Top to protect the finish.
English Moss: Perfect for Furniture Makeovers
Finally, we applied our English Moss Resin Paint one section at a time using a soft bristle brush. We love the Wooster Short Cut Brush, but any soft brush will do. Just cover the area with paint and then lightly smooth from edge to edge with a soft touch on your final pass. Our paint will self-level and smooth out for a soft, buttery-smooth finish.
PRO TIP: Keep a continuous mist water bottle handle and lightly mist the surface to add moisture to the project. This will prevent "dragging" of the paint and encourage self-leveling of the finish.
For the last touch on this piece, we used our metallic color, Bronze, to touch up the hardware including handles and hinges. Yes, we left the hardware on during our project and then just used a small artist brush to touch up as the final step. So simple!
Styling a Sideboard After a Makeover
So what makes English Moss the perfect color for this project? It's warm & inviting - and with gray undertones - neutral enough to blend with many color decor palettes. That makes it perfect for styling all year! Grab a simple or ornate mirror - large scale is best - and feature it over the piece. Then style the top of your piece simply throughout the year with seasonal accents. We can picture it paired with pastels and florals for spring - either in a vase or as a wreath hanging on the mirror. Make it light and airy for summer with ivories and whites. Then let is shine with all the warm & cozy accents for fall & winter! It's a year-round beauty!
